Over 80% of Americans Support Congressional Term Limits
PHOENIX, AZ, February 11, 2022 /24-7PressRelease/ — U.S. Term Limits (USTL) has launched a series of digital ads in Arizona calling out State Representatives Teresa Martinez, (HD-11), John Fillmore (HD-16), and Judy Burges (HD-1) for voting against HCR 2005 that would have seen Arizona adopt legislation to call for an amendment-proposing convention to adopt congressional term limits under Article V of the United States Constitution. In the case of Representative Burges, ads in her district call her out for breaking her pledge to support term limits for Congress. Burges, along with Fillmore and Martinez, voted against HCR 2005 in the House State Government Committee. Congressional terms limits are extremely popular among voters with over 80% of Americans supporting the proposition regardless of political affiliation. The ads are designed to educate citizens in the districts about the trio’s actions in voting no on term limits for Congress. The ads will reach over half a million Arizona voters in the three targeted districts.
Arizona State Representative David Cook (HD-8) had introduced HCR 2005 that would have seen Arizona join other states in issuing a call for an amendment-proposing convention for congressional term limits under Article V. By using Article V of the U.S. Constitution, 34 state legislatures can team up for a convention to propose a congressional term limits amendment. The Term Limits Convention initiative is being spearheaded by the nonpartisan, grassroots nonprofit advocacy group U.S. Term Limits.
“Voters in Arizona regardless of political party want congressional term limits but State Representatives Martinez, Fillmore, and Burges are blocking this essential reform,” said Ron Hooper, Regional Director of U.S. Term Limits. “When given a chance to have Arizona join other states in issuing a call for an amendment-proposing convention for congressional term limits, this trio voted no.”
“In the case of Representative Burges, she broke a pledge she made when running for office to vote for an amendment-proposing convention for congressional term limits under Article V,” continued Hooper. “Citizens deserve to know about this betrayal and that is the purpose of these ads.
“Congressional term limits is not a Democratic or Republican issue, it is an American issue,” concluded Hooper. “Arizonans want their state representatives to move forward in advancing congressional term limits and U.S. Term Limits will continue to keep citizens informed on those who support term limits and those like Representatives Martinez, Burges, and Fillmore who oppose congressional term limits..”
U.S. Term Limits is the oldest and largest grassroots term limits advocacy group in the country. We connect term limits supporters with their legislators and work to pass term limits on all elected officials, particularly on the U.S. Congress.
